"Haus Harkorten", built in 1756 as a representative main house by merchant and factory owner Johann C. Harkort III (1716-1761) and his wife Louisa Catharina Märcker (1718-1795) in late Baroque style, is associated with many personalities who were innovative contributors to industrial and socio-political change. The industrial pioneers Friedrich and Gustav Harkort and the renowned bridge designer Johann Caspar Harkort VI must be mentioned first and foremost.
However, the valuable architectural monument "Haus Harkorten" in the Westerbauer district of Hagen, Harkortstraße, urgently needs help. The "Verein zur Förderung des Erhalts und der Entwicklung von Haus Harkorten e.V." (Association for the Promotion of the Preservation and Development of Haus Harkorten), founded in 2016, has taken on the task of permanently securing the building. Haus Harkorten is currently being renovated - with combined funding from the federal government, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the German Foundation for Monument Protection, the city of Hagen and the association's members.
The building, often referred to as the "New House" (in contrast to the neighbouring "Old House" from the 17th century), is a unique architectural monument in Germany. The room structure corresponds almost entirely to the original form. The period windows, completely original doors and floorboards as well as 18th century fixtures and fittings form a unique collection. The association's long-term goal is to showcase this important building.
Despite the ongoing renovation work, smaller groups will still be able to visit, with public tours normally taking place on the first Saturday of every month from May 2024. Private tours are also possible to a limited extent. Further information: www.haus-harkorten.de or by email to kontakt@haus-harkorten.de.
