Then as now, brewery culture is alive and well in Düsseldorf. The waiters and waitresses, known for their tart charm and called "Köbesse" in Rhenish dialect, are an indispensable part of this. To honour their long tradition, the Köbes monument has stood in the old town since March 2024.
In Düsseldorf breweries, it is not uncommon for visitors to be poured a snappy remark by the Köbesse in addition to their beer. For example, ordering a glass of water is often humorously received with the phrase "Soap and a towel to go with it?". However, these typical idiosyncrasies are never meant maliciously. To commemorate the Köbessen and their tradition, a larger-than-life Rhenish "Jesöffschlepper" stands in Zollstraße. Equipped with an apron and tray, it welcomes guests to the historic city centre. The idea for the monument came from the Düsseldorfer Jonges local history association. The sculptor Peter Rübsam and the art founder Rolf Kayser realised the 2.20 metre high sculpture with the active support of the Haubrich Foundation and the Schmöle Foundation.
