Cultural centre

Situated in historic 19th century manor houses, the Schöppingen Artists' Village offers 40 scholarships in visual arts, literature and composition every year. Around 900 artists have been accepted since 1989. The scholarships cover stays of two to six months, open to international applicants with no age limit. In addition to regular insights into artistic processes through events and the CAP programme, the village promotes dialogue on art production and strategies. Annual publications document the activities and progress.

Viewing

The outside area of the farm can be visited at any time. 9 signs provide information on the history, background and projects.

The artists' village organises monthly dinners and brunches where visitors can gain an insight into the projects and exchange ideas with the artists.

History of the Artists' Village Foundation

Since 1989/1990, two carefully renovated, listed courtyards from the early 19th century have been home to the Schöppingen artists' village. A creative centre with studios, flats, workshops and event rooms has been created here in the centre of the village. Six flats in the "Fine Arts" courtyard and eight in the "Writers" courtyard offer artists and authors a place to retreat and concentrate on their work.

The foundation aims to specifically promote contemporary literature, visual arts, new media and interdisciplinary projects as well as experimental composition. Every year, international scholarships are awarded - including formats for mixed media, interdisciplinary approaches and the KWW scholarship for art, science and business.

The artists' village has become a place for international encounters and creative exchange. Over twenty artists and cultural practitioners live and work here every year - often across disciplines and with considerable resonance in the cultural sector. Public events and exhibitions make the artists' village a lively part of the regional cultural landscape.

The foundation is supported by the NRW Foundation, the state of NRW, the district of Borken and the municipality of Schöppingen. The scholarships are financed by the Kunststiftung NRW and the Landschaftsverband Rheinland, among others. Today, the artists' village is recognised as an innovative laboratory for artistic production in Westphalia.
