Introduction

The Neustadt colliery housing estate is a remarkable testimony to the mining history of the town of Ahlen.

The Neustadt colliery housing estate in Ahlen is an important example of the region's mining history. Originally built for the workers of the Westfalen colliery, the estate is characterised by its typical colliery houses. The architecture of the estate is characterised by traditional brick buildings from around 1900. Today, the colliery estate is a listed building and reflects the industrial past and the social structure of the mining community. A design manual regulates the preservation and renovation of the buildings in order to preserve their historical character.
