Sculpture

The "woodturner" is a headless, man-sized sandstone figure that epitomises the artistry of the craft. While the back of the torso remains raw and unworked, the front shows finely crafted details: strong arms and hands whose protruding veins suggest the hard labour of a woodturner. In his right hand, the woodturner proudly presents a spinning top, the "dop", as the central symbol of his craft. The deliberate lack of identification of a specific craftsman draws attention to the craft itself. On the right-hand plinth, the inscription "A dop for a sandwich" is a reminder of the turner's reward, which once brought joy to town children.
