The ‘Black water’ heath pond (Schwarzes Wasser) is one of Wesel's most popular local recreation areas.
The name ‘Black Water’ comes from the brown-black colour of the water, which is due to the humic substances washed out of the bog vegetation. The area has been designated as a nature reserve since 1936, making it one of the oldest in North Rhine-Westphalia.
This last heath pond on the lower Lower Rhine was formed during the last ice age.
A wonderful circular trail around the Black Water, which is also part of the Hohe Mark Nature Park, invites you to explore the unique flora and fauna.
