Museum/Exhibition

Why is the district of Herford called Widukindkreis? Or the town of Enger as Widukindstadt? What is behind the black horse on the district's coat of arms?

The Widukind Museum in Enger, which focuses on the Saxon nobleman Widukind, provides answers to these questions. He was the leader of the Saxons in the fight against the Franks and Christianization during the Saxon Wars (772-785). After Widukind gave up the fight against the Franks and their leader Charlemagne, he is said to have ridden to his (inevitable) baptism on a black horse.

The museum presents the myth of Widukind over the following centuries and explores the question of whether the Saxon is really buried in the collegiate church in Enger. Visitors can interactively try out how to carry out DNA analyses. The museum offers guided tours especially for children, including activities such as baking Widukind swords or building round shields. Guided tours of the town are also available for adults.
Further information can also be found under Sightseeing on the Fahr im Kreis website.
