The remains of the destroyed railway bridge are now contemporary witnesses to Wesel's city history.
At the end of WW II, the Wehrmacht destroyed this last link across the Rhine at the beginning of March 1945, ultimately in vain, in order to halt the advance of the Allied troops. Built between 1872 and 1874, the bridge once connected London with St. Petersburg on the Boxtel railway line in its heyday. Today it is both a landmark and a memorial.
