Nature reserve/natural monument

The Burlo-Vardingholter Venn and Entenschlatt is a 148-hectare nature reserve in the district of Borken, North Rhine-Westphalia, located in the towns of Borken and Rhede. As an important raised bog, it is home to typical development stages of raised bogs and fens. The area lies directly on the border with the Netherlands and continues there in the 67-hectare Wooldse Veen.

The Burlo-Vardingholter Venn is a refuge for numerous rare animal species. Birds such as the honey buzzard, black woodpecker and wood sandpiper are at home here. The critically endangered large moss dragonfly, a dragonfly species, also has one of its last populations in North Rhine-Westphalia here. The moor frog is common and the critically endangered smooth snake has also been recorded.

The Burlo-Vardingholter Venn and Entenschlatt offer nature lovers an impressive experience and make an important contribution to the preservation of rare habitats and species in Westmünsterland.
