Church

The baroque parish church of St George in Hopsten is one of the few churches of this style in Westphalia. Built between 1732 and 1736, the 48 metre high tower was completed in 1749. The church was built on the foundations of a Gothic predecessor chapel and marks the separation of Hopsten from the mother parish of Schapen in 1538. The interior houses an organ with 2,709 pipes, the oldest stops of which date back to the 18th century. In the neo-Gothic choir room there is a side altar with an image of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The church has been renovated several times, most recently in 1981/82. As the cultural centre of the village, it is an important testimony to regional architecture and religious continuity.
