Following the course of a river from its source to its mouth in the open sea is always something special. The Ems Cycle Path offers this unique experience: there are practically no gradients on the 385-kilometre route. The Ems Cycle Path is therefore also ideal for beginners. This tour tip describes the starting stage from the springs near Hövelhof to Harsewinkel on the edge of Münsterland.

The route begins right at the source of the Ems between Hövelhof and Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock at the foot of the Teutoburg Forest and winds its way through the Paderborn region and the district of Gütersloh.

Historical towns such as Rietberg and Rheda-Wiedenbrück with their unique half-timbered houses accompany your tour. The state garden shows in both towns, which now function as nature and recreation parks, enrich the landscape experience on the banks of the Ems. At the same time, nature reserves such as the Steinhorst basin provide a unique habitat for many water birds thanks to the damming of the Ems.

The Marienfeld monastery near Harsewinkel is a good stop-off point. The next stage of the Ems Cycle Path takes you to Münster.

The Ems is the shortest river in Germany at just under 385 km in length. The river rises in the Senne between Hövelhof and Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock and flows into the North Sea near Emden.
