Horn Town Hall

This stand tour starts at the Potthof parking lot, right next to the castle.

From the parking lot on the outskirts of the town, you can reach the town center, the market square, after a walk of around five minutes.

A village settlement first mentioned around 1120 was already located in this area 1000 years ago. In the first half of the 13th century, Bernhard III, Noble Lord of Lippe, founded the town following on from the existing settlement.

The date of foundation is not known, but the earliest mention of the town dates back to 1248. Horn thus represents the type of medieval founding town with a town castle.

The historical city tour is marked by yellow horns on the ground. If two croissants are shown at one point, there is a place of interest there, such as the historic town hall on the market square or the Franz Hausmann monument. On this tour, you will also see the last preserved town tower "Malzdarre" and many other sights await you in the historic town.

Walk from the parking lot in the direction of the city centre over the bridge to the castle and enter the castle district through a narrow gate in the city wall.

Leaving the castle courtyard, walk along Burgstraße to the church. To the right of the church is one of the town's historic water reservoirs, the Pfeifenkump.

East of the church, the town hall borders the market square.

In the center of the square is the monument to Franz Hausmann, a member of the Lippe state parliament and Reichstag.

The opposite side is dominated by the noble court of the v. Kotzenberg family of officials, drost of the sovereign. Late Renaissance architectural forms and decoration.

From this building, now the Hotel Vialon, you can reach the ramparts, which lie outside the city wall, and the street "Hinter der Mauer" via the Domensoot. Follow this to the left until you reach Leopoldstaler Straße. The last remaining town tower, the so-called Malzdarre, catches the eye above to the right.

Cross Leopoldstaler Straße and follow the ramparts until you reach Mittelstraße again after about 5 minutes. Turn left back towards the market square.

At the next intersection, you will find house number 76, a beautiful Wilhelminian-style building that is a landmark of the cityscape.

Immediately before reaching the market square on the right-hand side on Ratstwete is the Amtshaus building.

Beyond the points mentioned, there is still plenty to explore. You can now take a short tour of the town by turning right into Ratstwete and following it to Burgstraße. Turn right again here. On the left-hand side of Burgstraße, a sign points to the former synagogue and the synagogue school. A short distance further on, you will come to Nordstraße.

Once you have reached Mittelstraße (pedestrian zone) again, your short tour of the city is over.

The tour is also easy to manage with normal shoes.
