Bornheim-Brenig
Brühl (Wasserturm)
Directions
From Brenig (S), head towards Hemmerich. Turn right into Pützgasse and the next left into Kreuzbergstraße and you are already in the middle of the village. The castle ruins are striking here with an almost mystical aura. After the walls were rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century following a devastating fire and then survived two world wars unscathed, the castle was burned down again in 1945. In Hemmerich, parts of the cemetery wall were built using material from the Roman canal. From Hemmerich, you walk seamlessly along Hemmergasse to the neighboring village of Rösberg. Past the church and the inviting “Markusstube” inn, a romantic chestnut avenue leads to the village of Mertener Heide, which is only about 500 meters away. Between the two villages, a magnificent estate lies directly on the path: Rösberg Castle, which was completed in the 18th century (1) Stones from the former castle in Rösberg were used to build the castle. Shortly after the outskirts of Mertener Heide, a wide path leads into the forest and soon past a refuge. A detour to Walberberg leads to Roman relics off the main route that are particularly worth seeing. On the hike through the charming forest area, you have the opportunity to take a short detour of only about 500 meters to the beautifully situated Berggeistweiher (2). If you don't fancy the same way back, you can also walk all the way around the lake. To do this, you will need to plan an additional two kilometers. After crossing the A553, you reach the fascinating Ville lake district. This lake district was not created naturally, but by the lignite mined here in the 19th and 20th centuries. Following the closure of the mines, the open-cast mining area was renaturalized over an area of around 75 km². The resulting lakes and ponds are now valuable biotopes and important retreats for many animal and plant species. Passing the Villenhofer Maar (3) , you come to the Pingsdorfer See and thus also to a crossroads right at the edge of the forest. The Römerkanal hiking trail branches off to the left here. Follow the path straight ahead for about 100 meters until you reach Maiglerstraße in Brühl-Pingsdorf. From there it is not far to the end of the stage, the Brühl water tower.
