Rheinbach
Bornheim-Brenig
Directions
The starting point for this stage is the traffic circle on the street Vor Dem Dreeser Tor (S) . Follow this road to the junction with Martinstraße, turn right and then immediately half left onto Pützstraße. Cross a parking lot behind the historic town gate and pass the glass museum at the end. Rheinbach is also known as the “town of glass”, as German glass refiners from northern Bohemia settled here in 1947 and continued to develop their craftsmanship. After a few meters, the remains of Rheinbach Castle (1) rise into the air. The mighty round tower is also known as the witches' tower, as the lowest floor was probably used as a prison during the time of the witch hunts. After crossing the main road, you walk past the former hospital and cross the streets Römerkanal and Am Getreidespeicher to reach an underpass just before the train station. You then walk past the waterworks and follow the farm track along the railroad tracks and orchards to Lüftelberg (2) . St. Peter's Church is located on Petrusstraße, where St. Lüfthildis was buried under a sinter slab from the Roman canal. From there, it is a short detour of around 100 meters to Lüftelberg Castle. Originally a moated castle, the complex was converted into a palace in the 18th century. The garden hall and baroque garden are worth a visit. On a wide gravel path, you walk past a gravel pit and shortly afterwards cross the village of Buschhoven. There is a small lake in the middle of the pretty village. This was part of a moat that surrounded a former moated castle. On the outskirts of the village, you walk past a chapel and enter a dense forest area, the Kottenforst. In the Kottenforst, the excavation ditch is the clearest evidence of the Roman canal. At a path spider you will come across a refuge and the “Iron Man” (3) . This is a pig iron bar anchored in the ground. Its origin and former purpose leave room for numerous assumptions and so it is not surprising that numerous legends surround this place. The next striking point is the “Kamelleboom”. The name comes from the fact that children once waited here by a tree for their parents to return from the weekly market - in the hope that they would bring sweets with them. As soon as you leave the forest, there is a golf course on the left (4) and you can soon see the towns of Bornheim and Brenig, the destination of today's stage. You can return to the Bornheim streetcar stop by bus or on foot (2 km).
