ROTHAARSTEIG TRAIL “Trödelsteinpfad” (“Trödelstein path”)

The tour starts at the hikers’ car park in the Austrasse in Wahlbach. From there, follow the markings to the edge of the wood. Taking a clockwise direction, walk along a forest path by the burbling Buchheller stream, which you first follow, and then enter further into the wood. The path takes a right-angle turn and now ascends up to the Trödelsteine rocks. Along the way, you can see evidence of former iron ore mining in the Buchhellertal valley: openings to the mines and slag residues are relics from the mining era. You can already see the summit cross on the Trödelsteine rocks from afar. Once you reach the top, there’s a view into the green Siegerland region in good weather. Naturally, you can also enter your name in the summit book. You can then make the steep descent. Following the E1, which runs parallel with the Trödelstein path for several hundred meters, you cross the state boundary between Rhineland Palatinate and NRW. Leave the long-distance hiking trail and walk through mystical forests along narrow paths until you reach the starting point. Along the way, you pass along the edge of the juniper heathland in the Saukaute nature reserve. Shortly before the end of the tour, a view opens out onto the unique landscape between the Rothaargebirge and Westerwald regions. Continuing along narrow paths that still require surefootedness, you return to Wahlbach.

Information on the rescue boards on the Rothaarsteig

Hiking trails are usually far from communities and settlements and every hiker has worried at some time about what would happen if there was an emergency. How can I be found here? Where am I? Can I contact the rescue service?

In serious cases, however, this has to happen quickly! Because of this, so-called rescue signs have been installed all along the Rotharrsteig. The green and white plaques that have been attached to the signposts show the number you have to give when making your emergency call. This tells the rescuers exactly where you are, allowing valuable time to be saved.

Sturdy shoes, weatherproof clothing and sufficient food and drink is recommended for a hike on the Trödelstein path.

You need to be surefooted along some of the paths.

A combination of paths, woodland passages, wonderful views and gushing streams. There are cosy places to stop for a rest along the Buchheller stream. Enter your name in the summit book.

The point of entry is the Austraße car park in the Burbach district of Wahlbach. Enter Austraße, 57299 Burbach into your car’s navigation system.

1. You can park your car in the immediate vicinity of the fire department equipment depot (Brückenstraße 2). You can reach the Trödelsteinpfad (“Trödelstein path”) via the marked Rothaarsteig trail on Diesterwegstraße. Follow the path in the direction of Burbach.
2. You can also park your car in the Buchhellertal valley. Follow the “Trödelsteinpfad” signs from Erzweg in Burbach. The hiking car park is after the first bridge over the Buchheller on the right.

You can get here in comfort by train RB 96. Exit at Wahlbach. From there, you can reach the hiking tour via the marked Rothaarsteig access route in the direction of Burbach. The loop tour can also be reached by bus. Exit at the “Schule” (school) stop in Burbach-Wahlbach.
