Enjoy art and nature in and around the Teutoburg Forest on this circular tour through the countryside!

Enjoy art and nature in and around the Teutoburg Forest on this circular tour through the countryside and discover the Johannisbach floodplain, the Moorbachtal and Ochsenheide nature reserves, the Peter August Böckstiegel Museum, beech forest and species-rich dry grassland and the Natural History Museum!

The flat start with park paths is followed by the gentle hills of the Ravensberger Hügelland and finally the somewhat more challenging climbs of the Teutoburg Forest.

Attractive "green" paths connect the districts of Bielefeld: from Oldentruper Park via KulturLand am Schelphof to Johannisbachaue and Obersee.

From here, things get hillier. Through the Moorbach Valley Nature Reserve, you reach the district of Theesen. From here, you have a good view over the city. Cycle on cycle paths and side roads over rolling hills.

Small villages, impressive individual farms and small tree-lined stream valleys such as the Moorbachtal and the  Schwarzbachtal are scattered across the gently undulating landscape of the Ravensberger Hügelland.

Between the Wassermühle in Deppendorf and Werther, the cycle route follows the Böckstiegel Trail with information boards about the paintings and life of the painter P. A. Böckstiegel and leads to the Museum Peter August Böckstiegel next to the historic red artist's house, which opened in 2018.

From Werther, the route takes you up into the Teutoburg Forest and back down to Kirchdornberg, a rural district of Bielefeld. The ride on slightly ascending gravel paths under the canopy of the Bielefeld city forest to Olderdissen Animal Park is a special treat. You cycle back down through the Johannistal valley to Bielefeld's old town.

Detour to the Ochsenheide nature reserve (2x 0.5km):

Gracious orchids and blue fringed gentian grow in the Ochsenheide nature reserve, a dry grassland in the middle of the forest. Park your bike at the Farmhouse Museum, take the sunny path around the Ochsenheide and enjoy the view over the heights of the Teutoburg Forest!

.

You can shorten or extend your tour on the "Bielefeld picturesque!" cycle route at any time, as the route runs entirely within the junction network. Large signs along the route inform you about other leisure cycle routes in Bielefeld.

In addition to cycle paths, park paths and side roads, some gravel forest paths are also used. Only in the Moorbach Valley is the route more difficult to cycle on.

Please stay on the paved paths in the forest and in nature reserves!

Some routes lead over private roads. We thank the owners for their permission to use the paths.

A detour must be taken at Jahnplatz (signposted).

At Johannisberg, a detour to the (link:) Farmhouse Museum and the café there is well worthwhile.

The Ochsenheide also invites you to take a walk: Graceful orchids and blue fringed gentian grow in the Ochsenheide nature reserve, a dry grassland in the middle of the forest.
