Sieg adventure trail - in the forest and on the heath

The Wahner Heide with its sandy paths is one of the most extraordinary landscapes in the Sieg natur region. The gentle hike leads you through the protected area of the Wahner heide which has more than 5000 hectare. In adittion to that the path leads you mostly through the Lohmar Forest. There you will come across individual ponds and exiting swamp areas that provide a home for rare animal and plant species.

Details
From the Siegelsknippen hiking car park, a long forest path takes you deep into the forest - the noise of the nearby urban centers is only muted here. Then it goes in the direction of Lohmar. After passing through the city center, you have the opportunity to stop off at a cosy place by the river. After crossing the Aggerauen, the entrance to the Wahner Heide nature reserve begins. A narrow path leads you uphill past the Kronenweiher, which is home to toads, newts and grass snakes. The route goes along the edge of the forest and offers a beautiful view of the open heath and sturdy pines. In the middle of the forest lies the idyllic Leyenweiher, where benches invite you to take a break. With a bit of luck, you will spot ducks and water hens or herons on the hunt. The route leads through the forest again with its mighty, old trees and past the Aggerstadion along a floodplain landscape towards Siegburg. After crossing the Agger again, you reach the species-rich “Gagelbestand” nature reserve, a heather moor with some beautiful ponds and aromatic bushes. The route takes you back to the Lohmar forest in a wide arc, where fish ponds and the dense forest make you forget the noise of the nearby federal roads and motorway. A wide forest path leads you along a straight path towards Stallberg, and later a pretty path winds its way further to Kaldauen. Benches invite you to rest again. After a few changes of direction, the route returns to the hiking car park.

Please stay on the paths. You are in a nature reserve, many of the animal species native to the Wahner Heide are threatened with extinction. Part of the heath is military security area, in the past the area ws used for military puroses and is often contaminated with munitions.
