Parking lot at Heisterbach Monastery (counter-clockwise hike recommended)

We start this wine hike at Heisterbach Abbey and admit that there is obviously no connection to wine growing here. But only obviously, because in the Middle Ages, Cistercian monks, although committed to abstinence, continued the wine-growing tradition of the Romans with great skill and ability. In the 12th century, the monks of the Heisterbach monastery played an important role in winegrowing in the Siebengebirge, providing new impetus and cultivating vineyards as far as the Heisterbach valley.

Today, the area under cultivation in Oberdollendorf, namely Rosenhügel, Laurentiusberg and Sülzenberg, has shrunk to just over 7 hectares and is run by one winegrower, the Blöser family in Bachstraße. We take the hiking trail past the new pond in the direction of Dollendorfer Hardt and cross the high mixed forest, circle the Hardt on the southern forest path and come to Hülle, the vantage point above the vineyard. Following the wine trail, we walk through the vineyards and come to the Sülz estate, the former freehold of the monastery, and ascend through the Mühlental valley, where there used to be 18 mills. After passing the cemetery, we reach the orchards and enjoy the beautiful path, the fruit in the fall and the beautiful view of the Oberkasseler Wand. After the development, we walk through former vineyards, which we can recognize by the walls with steps and the embedded bronze plaque. Near Haus Heisterberg, the Kellerberg vineyard has been replanted and shows the old wine-growing tradition with rammed wood.

Details

The trail is one of the easier hikes in the hiking guide. The climbs, e.g. from the monastery to Dollendorfer Hardt, are steady and spread over a longer distance. The ascent through the Mühlental valley is also easy to manage, as is the ascent through the former vineyards up to the JUFA Hotel, which has no steep sections.

New pond at and in the Heisterbach monastery, vineyards with a view, stone crosses on former Dollendorf Bittwege, Kellerberg vineyard at the JuFa guest house, orchards on the outskirts of Dollendorf

Take the A59 and then the B42 to the Königswinter-Niederdollendorf exit, then head towards Heisterbacherrott/Thomasberg to Heisterbach Monastery
