Just behind the Derenbachtal hiking car park, you climb uphill under old deciduous trees on an increasingly narrow, root-filled path. In the middle of the forest, where beech, spruce and mixed forest alternate, you reach the "Roman Road", a historic trade route between Cologne and Siegerland. After crossing, benches offer the opportunity to rest with a beautiful view over a wide meadow. Initially on wider paths, later alternating downhill and uphill - partly through areas characterized by reforestation and forest conversion - the route continues past a shelter and steeply downhill near the Derenbach. In gentle switchbacks, the route takes you uphill again on a forest path until you reach the small town of Winterscheid with its beautiful Romanesque church of St. Servatius. The path leads steeply downhill across meadows, then later uphill on beautiful paths through the middle forest to the village of Schreckenberg with its old fruit trees and half-timbered houses. The trail continues through an interesting section of forest with trees from different generations; the abundant dead wood provides suitable habitats for insects, fungi and mosses. The multiple levels caused by different tree heights are a clear sign of a forest managed in a natural way. A forest path leads past a shelter, comfortably but steeply down the Rennenberg until you emerge from the dense greenery again and reach the starting point.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to forestry work, some sections of the route are very rutted and there are also branches and twigs on the path in some places
