Directions
From Schladern station, which was awarded the title of “NRW hiking station” in 2014, you hike towards Krummauel. The oxbow lake of the Sieg is home to many rare animal and plant species with its alder swamp forests, reed beds and water areas. You soon have your first view of Windeck Castle. Along the outskirts of Schladern, the path gradually climbs up to the high castle. You have a great view from its plateau. After a steep descent, a museum village at the foot of the castle hill tells you about life and work in earlier times. The tour then takes you through the village of Altwindeck on quiet roads towards Dattenfeld. From the edge of the village, the route climbs up to the Kolfenberg, after a passage along open forest regeneration areas you can take a break at the refuge. After a steep descent to the river and its crossing, an asphalt path on the outskirts of Dreisel leads uphill again - here, too, a new generation of forest is growing on the areas of former spruce stands. After crossing the Sieg, you will reach the waterfall on a steep descent. It was created during railroad construction, when a breakthrough was blasted into the rock to avoid further costly bridge construction. The Elmore's factory was once located here: a hydroelectric power plant once provided the electricity for the machines used to manufacture copper pipes. In the vicinity of the former dispatch hall, which has been converted into the “kabelmetal” community and cultural center, you will find the Sieg Nature Region Visitor Center, an extraordinary beer garden and an ice cream parlor. After a short section over the railroad embankment, the tour ends at the station.
