From the train station, you can reach the banks of the Sieg in just a few steps. If you have time and patience, you can watch cormorants and grey herons hunting for prey. After a short section on the asphalted cycle path along the Sieg, you reach St. Laurentius Church, which locals proudly call the "Siegtal Cathedral". On the outskirts of the village, the impressive "Dattenfeld Castle" is impressive - the building from the 17th century was expanded and converted in a historicizing manner by its later owners and is now used as a conference and event location. The tour then takes you to Elisenthal on a wide forest path. The tree-covered slopes of the shady valley belong to the "Nutscheid" mountain range. In the forest, the valley opens up a little - you reach the site of a former black powder mill. Founded in 1871, the factory produced highly explosive mixtures until 1918. Stairs, bridges and wooden walkways make exploring the former production site an experience. A rest area at the former boiler house invites you to linger. You continue your tour on a wide forest path, water lilies stand by wet, swampy ponds, and birch trees grow all around. The following section of the path is characterized by forest renewal areas: after the loss of spruce stands, a more climate-stable mixed deciduous forest is developing on the open areas. Across steep meadows past the Ommeroth riding stables, you reach the Engbachtal on a panoramic path over a light ridge. With the stream as your companion, the hike leads uphill through further reforestation areas, where wonderful views over forests, meadows and the town of Dattenfeld reward the effort - and bring the end of the tour into view.
