NATURE AND GLASS IN FOCUS

The town of Rheinbach is known for its glass production. In the glass museum, visitors can marvel at a colorful range of glass objects that could only be created through the targeted use of fire. In addition to the glass museum, the Himmeroder Hof also houses one of the four nature park centers of the Rhineland Nature Park. Two interesting tours start from there: the “Rheinbach Rallye” leads through the medieval town center (quiz sheet is available at the nature park center) and the approx. 12 km long “Rheinbacher-Wald-Runde” runs along the ruins of the Waldkapelle monastery and the pilgrim ponds. You can find more information about the route under Tour tip.

The “Himmeroder Hof”, which houses the nature park center and the glass museum, is the ideal starting point for a hike in the Rheinbach forest. Along the old town wall, between the Hexen and Wasemer towers, the tour begins with an insight into Rheinbach's historically significant buildings, some of which date back to the 12th century. Passing the Roman aqueduct, the route leads through the leisure park and Rheinbach's city forest. Surrounded by small natural foothill streams and ponds, the trail runs through a mixed beech-oak forest. Along the edge of the forest in the south-western area of the Rheinbach forest, the circular trail leads past fields and meadows to the “Black Cross”. From there, you follow the old Roman road to the forest chapel. Via the “new pilgrims' path” with the idyllic pilgrims' path ponds, the route leads back towards the urban area.

On the section between the “Black Cross” and the forest chapel, the Tomburg and Rheinbacher-Wald-Runde overlap, so that the routes can be linked together at this point to form a 20 km circular route. Both trails are part of the six discovery tours along the Rhineland Nature Park Fire Route. True to the motto: 4 elements - 1 nature park, the element “fire” is brought to life here through various stations, such as the glass museum in Rheinbach, the long kiln in the pottery village of Adendorf or the volcanic crater of the extinct Rodderberg.
