CASTLE, BASALT AND IRON ORE

High on the volcanic cone of the Tomberg, Count Palatine Hermann built his manor house around the year 900. The mountain itself provided the basalt rock as building material. After an eventful history, robber barons lived on the Tomburg in the 14th century, raiding trade transports on the Aachen-Frankfurt army road from here. In 1473, the castle was besieged and largely destroyed by the Duke of Jülich. For a long time afterwards, the hill and the remains of the castle were used as a basalt quarry, and around the Tomberg, interest was focused on another mineral treasure: around 1860, the hill, which is visible from afar at a height of 316 meters, marked the boundary between two mining fields for iron ore extraction.

THE TOMBBURG CIRCUIT

The Tomburg loop is 9.8 km long and runs mostly through the species-rich forests of the Rheinbacher Wald and Tomberg nature reserves. Basalt and iron ore were once mined here. Due to the special microclimate, rare heat-loving plants such as black nettle and speierling can be discovered on the circular trail, and a few medium climbs along the way are always rewarded with beautiful views. The highlight of the hike is the castle ruins with the summit view from the Tomberg over the Drachenfelser Ländchen and the Kottenforst to the distant Siebengebirge. You can find more information about the route under Tour tip.
