We start our 11.2 km hike at the free car park of the LWL Industrial Museum TextilWerk Bocholt. After crossing the pedestrian lights at Uhlandstraße, we reach the Bocholter Aasee, THE local recreation area for the people of Bocholt. We walk along the eastern shore of the lake and enjoy idyllic views of the lake again and again. If the mood takes us, we can stop at a beach café at the southern end of the lake or relax a little at the bathing bay. We then leave the lake in an easterly direction and after a short walk reach the "Hohenhorster Berge" nature reserve. Strictly speaking, this is the southern slope of the Bocholt Aatal valley, consisting of post-glacial sand dunes. However, the original sand and heath landscape is only preserved in remnants.
We continue through the park at the Rodelberg into the 69-hectare Bocholt city forest. Here we can go for a wonderful walk. There are small and large paths, an enclosure for red deer and wild boar, several small lakes and a lot of peace and quiet. In the middle of the forest is a popular Western-style restaurant/café with a beautiful beer garden, perfect for a snack. And the adjacent large playground is a great place for children to run around.
Next on the agenda is the city centre of Bocholt. We let ourselves drift - with a capuccino in one of the cosy cafés, shopping at the lively, colourful weekly market in front of the historic town hall or in the shopping streets. Real shopping fans are certainly drawn to the hustle and bustle of the covered shopping arcades.
After a short idyllic walk along the Bocholter Aa, we return to the LWL Industrial Museum TextilWerk Bocholt. Over the new podium bridge made of "rusting" corten steel we reach the former Herding spinning mill on the opposite side of the Bocholter Aa. This part of the industrial museum offers the ideal space for exciting and changing exhibitions.
In the weaving mill, rattling machines tell of Bocholt's exciting textile history.
The adjacent museum restaurant/café provides the perfect end to our walk.
