From the car park, a path leads through a park with sculptures and sensory stations surrounding the castle. Before you reach the Troisdorf forest park, you cross a lush green residential area on a short street with the romantic name "Prinzenwäldchen". In the adjacent forest, a pond with a fountain surrounded by old trees creates an idyllic calm. The neighboring aviaries of the Troisdorf bird park are home to over a dozen species, and ducks, geese and turtles frolic in the pond. A wooden cross then marks the entrance to a young deciduous forest. Later, the comfortable forest path crosses the "Mauspfad" - a traffic connection to Düsseldorf that is over a thousand years old. On the following section of the path, you can see the edge of the Middle Rhine Terrace running nearby. The path continues through the changing vegetation zones typical of the Wahner Heide with changing forest types, ferns and mosses. After crossing the historic trade route "Eisenweg" you reach the "Kuckucksweg" - a beautiful narrow path that winds through light and Mediterranean-looking pine stands. The area then opens up to a spacious, sandy heathland. Iron ore from Siegerland was once transported to the Rhine through the area, which is now covered with individual moor and sand birch forests. If you look closely, you will be amazed by the incredible biodiversity. Over the Ravensberg, past the mystical-looking relics of a former hermitage, comfortable forest paths lead you to the Troisdorf game reserve "Hirschpark" and back to the castle.
Please stay on the paths. You are in a nature reserve, many of the animal species native to the Wahner Hiede are threatened whith extinction. Part of the heath is military security area, in the past the area was used for military purposes and is often contaminated with munitions.
Sturdy shoes and wather-appropriate clothing are recomended. The trail is suitable for families with strollers (no buggeis with smal wheels) als also for peolpe who feel safer on partially paved surfaces.
If you start the tour from the parking lot at the forest cementery, you can take more time and in adition to that you can park there for free and for an unlimitetd time. The parking lot at Burg Wissem is limited to 3 hours of parking and is often very busy at weekends.
By car: A59 exit Troisdorf, then drive towards the center, after the roundabout follow the signs to Burg Wissem muesum. Enter in your navigation system: Römerstraße or Burgalle. Parking spaces are directly at Burgalle or at Römertraße.
There are two free parking lots on both sides of Altenrather Str: Wahner Heide parking lot and the Fliegenberg parking lot. In case of high occupancy, we recommend the parking lot at the Troisdorf forest cemetery (Heerstraße)
