The "Built on sand" cycle route follows the traces of sand, as a lot is built on and with sand in Münsterland. The circular route is around 300 kilometres long. It takes you past castles, moated castles and manor houses through the idyllic Münsterland parkland. The cycle tour starts in Münster. Some of the most important sandstone buildings can already be seen there. But this tour is not just about cycling. There is also the opportunity to look over the shoulder of a stonemason!

The starting point of the cycle route is the university city of Münster. The city is definitely worth a visit. There is a lot to discover. Highlights include the historic town hall on Prinzipalmarkt, the Picasso Museum, the cathedral and the LWL Museum of Art and Culture. A visit to Lake Aa or a tour of the botanical gardens at the castle are also worthwhile.

Before cycling along the quiet paths of the parkland to Steinfurt-Borghorst, cyclists can admire the sandstone buildings in Münster and the surrounding area. The old aristocratic palace Erbdrostenhof is located in the centre of Münster's pedestrian zone and is one of the most beautiful sandstone buildings anywhere. Next up is Haus Rüschhaus, the home of the Westphalian poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. The poet's birthplace, Hülshoff Castle in Havixbeck, is also visited.

Cyclists can then look over the shoulder of a stonemason in the sandstone museum in Havixbeck. The processing and use of natural stone can be admired there.

After Bagnopark, the route continues to Steinfurt moated castle. The romantic gatehouse of the castle marks the beginning of the picturesque old town. Rheine on the River Ems is reached via Wettringen with the Offlumer See lake. The Falkenhof Museum and Bentlage Abbey, just a few kilometres to the north, are well worth a visit. Passing the "wet triangle" of Hörstel, where the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the Mittelland Canal meet, the route continues to Gravenhorst Abbey. The next highlight of this cycle tour is the art centre with its café, which always offers interesting projects and exhibitions.

Cyclists travel via Ibbenbüren with the "Dörenthe" nature adventure park and the "NaturaGart" adventure garden to Tecklenburg and from there via Lengerich with its gatehouse "Der Römer" to the stage town of Ladbergen.

From there, the cycle route leads to the southern, flat region around Ostbevern. Loburg Castle is the next real treasure in the Münsterland region. After a walk through the park behind the castle or a tour of the town of Ostbevern, the route continues to Warendorf. The town on the River Ems is the cultural centre of south-eastern Münsterland and has a beautiful old town. Cyclists should not miss out on a visit to the historic stables at the NRW State Stud.

Cyclists take the Ems cycle path to Telgte. The pilgrimage town offers a wonderful townscape. The pilgrimage chapel is another sandstone building. The RELíGIO Museum is well worth a visit and the Pleister Mill on the River Werse is a nice place to stop for refreshments before returning to Münster.

Coming from the south and north:

Coming from the east:

B51 in the direction of Münster.

Münster offers 13 P+R car parks on the access roads to the city centre. Buses run regularly from there to the centre of Münster.

There are numerous paid parking spaces and multi-storey car parks in the city centre. Availability is indicated by a car park guidance system.

There are electric charging points in the "Alter Steinweg", "Engelschanze" and "Münster Arkaden" multi-storey car parks.

The "Built on sand" cycle route is signposted. The route is integrated into the red and white cycle route signage as an insert sign/pictogram. The insert sign is located directly below the destination signposts. The integration into the dense Münsterland-wide cycle route network with its junction system makes orientation particularly easy for those familiar with the area. This makes it easy to choose shortcuts or detours according to individual requirements.

The "Historic town centres" route and the 100 castles route are also integrated as insert signs.
