Cycle tour around Münster

Following in the footsteps of the great poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, a 34-kilometre cycle tour leads from Münster Castle to impressive historical buildings.

Hülshoff Castle, Rüschhau House, Münster Castle - illustrious names adorn this 34-kilometre cycle tour. Not only is the work of the Westphalian master builder Johann Conrad Schlaun omnipresent, but also the life and work of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff.

The urban hustle and bustle of Münster and the tranquillity of the Münsterland parkland form a delightful contrast on the cycle tour.

Münster Castle is the magnificent starting point of the cycle tour. Via junctions 28 and 15, the cycle path leads through the quiet suburbs of the city. The buildings along the route become increasingly sparse and after just a few turns of the pedals, the Münsterland shows its rural side. The cycle path leads in a wide arc through meadows, fields and nature reserves. Rare animals and plants can be spotted time and again, especially in the Vorbergs Hügel nature reserve.

Then you reach one of the highlights of the cycle tour. Hülshoff Castle, birthplace of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, offers a picturesque view from the entrance to the park. Embedded in extensive expanses of water, the castle offers ever-changing perspectives on a tour through the romantic park. The Droste Museum in the castle provides a comprehensive insight into the life and work of the great poet. With the "Centre for Literature", literature and poetry are still omnipresent today.

The cycle tour follows in Droste's footsteps to Münster. The beautiful Vögeding House greets you from the roadside before you reach the Rüschhaus, where the small museum provides an insight into the everyday life of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. The poet lived in this magnificent building for 20 years and the idyllic baroque garden offers a particularly beautiful view of Haus Rüschhaus.

The cycle tour turns into the last stage. On the outward journey, the cycle path leads back to Münster Castle. Just a few minutes away, the beautiful old town centre invites you to take a stroll. The numerous sights can be easily explored on foot or by bike.

The Botanical Gardens are located directly behind Münster Castle. Beautiful flowerbeds, natural paths and idyllic water features invite you to discover and linger.

By car from the south via the A1 (Cologne-Bremen) or A43 (Wuppertal-Münster) to the Münster-Süd motorway junction. From there continue on the B51 in the direction of Münster. Follow the road through Münster until you see the castle and Schlossplatz on the left-hand side.

Coming by car from the north, take the A1 (Bremen-Cologne) to the Münster-Nord motorway junction. From there, follow the B54 in the direction of Münster. Follow the road towards the city centre. Then follow the signs to the castle.

We recommend travelling by train. Münster main station is served by numerous ICE, IC and regional trains. The "Promenade" is located between the station and the old town. The castle is easy to reach via the car-free old town ring road.

A large paid car park is located directly next to the castle on the Schlossplatz.

The cycle route is not signposted, but follows the entire signposted junction network.
