Cycle tour through the Baumberge

Lesser-known but no less charming manor houses, monasteries and castles are at the centre of this 44 km cycle tour in the Baumberge. In the heart of the Münsterland, not only the historic buildings but also nature show themselves from their most beautiful side.

icon-info Details

The imposing Gerleve Monastery in Billerbeck is the starting point for the "Hidden behind hedges" cycle tour. On the first stage towards Billerbeck, Haus Hameren is located along the route. The privately owned monument also offers a marvellous view from the edge of the path.

The mighty Billerbeck Cathedral can already be seen on the horizon. In the town centre, cosy restaurants and cafés invite you to take your first break. Kolvenburg Castle is located right on the edge of the town centre. The art exhibitions are always worth a visit. Towards Rosendahl, the cycle path leads through the hilly landscape of the Baumberge. Nevertheless, it is not really strenuous. There are always beautiful views of the region. Several hidden castles can be admired from the cycle path.

Just before Coesfeld, it is worth making a detour to Haus Loburg. Its historical roots are said to go back to Charlemagne. In the centre of Coesfeld, just a few turns of the pedals further on, shopping facilities and restaurants beckon. On the last few kilometres, the Münsterland once again presents itself from its rural side. The Drei-Linden-Höhe offers a wonderful view of the Baumberge and the last few kilometres to Gerleve Abbey are once again pure cycling pleasure.

Take the A31 motorway (Oberhausen-Emden) to the Coesfeld exit or the A43 motorway (Recklinghausen-Münster) to the Nottuln exit. From both motorways take the B525 towards Coesfeld or Nottuln. Follow the main road for approx. 14 km or approx. 16 km to the Kloster Gerleve junction.

If you prefer to travel by train, you can also join the cycle tour in Coesfeld. The station is regularly served by regional trains from Dortmund, Dorsten, Enschede and Münster.

Free car and coach parking is available at Gerleve Monastery. Disabled parking spaces are located near the monastery gate.

The cycle route is not signposted, but follows the signposted junction network in its entirety. For better orientation, the use of a GPX track is recommended.

Information for cyclists

At Coesfeld railway station there is a chargeable bicycle parking facility with a total of 66 parking spaces.
