Directions
In Rheinbach, you have the opportunity to take a look at restored parts of a Roman water pipeline that transported drinking water from the Eifel to Cologne. You leave the historic town through the town park, following the Gräbbach stream and passing the Eifelfuß nature reserve, which provides a habitat for rare animal and plant species. Afterwards, a pilgrimage trail leads you through the Rheinbach forest: a beautiful single trail along a stream with small ponds. At a chapel built in the middle of the forest, you change direction and follow a path towards Tomberg. The castle ruins give you the opportunity to take a break and the view extends over open countryside as far as the Siebengebirge mountains. Long straights through picture-book forest follow, and back in the open countryside you discover the village of Hilberath with its barn café. Time to slow down: You reach another wooded area on secluded country lanes. The paths stretch as far as the horizon and offer plenty of opportunity for in-depth conversations or freewheeling. After another passage on a comfortable forest path through the Blitzenhardt, you reach Berscheid, a cultivated landscape sloping towards the Rhine with panoramic views for miles across the Kottenforst and into the Bergisches Land. In the hamlet of Scherbach you will find a lively rest area if required. Back in the Rheinbach forest, you will see a familiar sight: single trails winding through the terrain with wooden footbridges over a lively forest stream. Before you reach Rheinbach, you discover a steely piece of regional history - in the final months of the Second World War, Allied combat units bombed a German Wehrmacht ammunition depot hidden in the Rheinbach municipal forest. The steel shell of a 5-centner high-explosive bomb is displayed on a pedestal by the wayside. If you get hungry during the extended tour, you can stop for a bite to eat in Rheinbach.
