Cycle route 4 around Dülmen

The route leads from Dülmen via Sythen to Haltern am See and back again, always accompanied by the element of water. The 35-kilometre cycle route takes you past the highlights of the Haltern reservoir and Silbersee II. Here you can enjoy pedal boating, swimming and many photo opportunities such as the old mill and the Sythen moated castle.

The route runs in a clockwise direction. It starts at the railway station in Dülmen. The route initially heads south. After the route becomes increasingly surrounded by green meadows and fields, cyclists reach the Große Teichsmühle after around four kilometres. It's worth stopping here for a photo or a coffee in the hotel next door.

A few kilometres further on, the Linnert meadows open up. Numerous bird species can be spotted in the meadows. With a bit of luck, you may even spot the now rare lapwing.

In Sythen , cyclists come across the former moated castle, Schloss Sythen, dating back to 758 and an old watermill. The gatehouse and the chapel building with its impressive cross vault are now listed buildings.

After this cultural highlight, the route leads a short distance through the forest and straight towards the Haltern reservoir, a natural attraction. The reservoir is used to produce drinking water and offers many water sports and leisure activities, such as a water playground in the Stadtmühlenbucht. The reservoir is then circumnavigated.

If you wish, you can take a detour to the beautiful Westruper Heide nature reserve on the south side. In August, the heath is transformed into a bright sea of colour.

The route continues into the town centre of Haltern am See before heading back towards Sythen.

Another detour is possible in Lembraken, for those who want to go for another swim. From Lembraken, the route leads to Silbersee II with its shiny silver sandy beach.

For everyone else, the trail leads north-east to Silver Lake III, where the views of the lake are marvellous!

After this natural highlight, the route continues to Hausdülmen with its bizarre pine tree and on to Burgplatz.

From here, cyclists cycle across the fields of the Münsterland parkland back to Dülmen railway station.

There are numerous opportunities for a picnic along the route. Picnic baskets with regional delicacies can be ordered from Dülmen Marketing up to two days in advance.

The route information for "Rundtour 4" is displayed below the red and white signposting of the NRW cycle route network.

The route can be recognised by the green and yellow inserts. Cyclists on this route follow the signs labelled "Dülmen" and a yellow four.

There is also an indication of the junction on the arrow signposts. With the help of the Münsterland-wide junction system, it is also possible for those unfamiliar with the area to easily navigate through the region and take a detour, for example.
