Hiking around Ibbenbüren

The Westphalian Heritage Association's X 13 hiking trail connects Schale in northern Tecklenburger Land with Lüdinghausen in south-western Münsterland over 133 kilometres. With this impressive length, the trail can only be completed as a multi-day hike, but shorter stages are also possible as day hikes. For example, the route from Ibbenbüren to Recke-Steinbeck is a good 17 kilometres long. And the best thing is that the return journey can be made by bus. This also runs on Sundays and public holidays and then takes over the second mountain stage.

Hiking: On the X13 from Ibbenbüren through the Buchholz to Steinbeck

The starting point for this hike is the car park on the corner of Groner Allee and An der Aa, not far from the Ludwigkirche church. Heading west, the hiker first follows the signs for the Töddenland cycle path along the Ibbenbürener Aa out of town. At the junction with the Püsselbüren border, the hiker turns right onto the cycle path, crosses the Püsselbüren dam and soon has the new bridge over Talstraße in sight. This is where the Töddenland cycle path and the X13 meet and lead the hiker gently uphill to the Dickenberg. The X13 hiking trail with its distinctive white cross on a black background continues along the Rudolfschacht spoil tip and through the Buchholzer Forst forest. Information boards along the way provide interesting facts about the beginnings of coal mining in the Ibbenbüren coalfield in this state forest. The trail then leaves the forest and runs along the edge of the forest with views of fields and meadows and continues along country lanes until the Mittelland Canal comes into view when you reach Steinbeck Marina. Here, the Panorama Café invites you to stop for coffee and cake before the hiker sets off on the final spurt: Just a short distance along the canal, then turn right and you have reached the end of the stage. The bus stop "Steinbeck Mitte" is served by the R26 line, which takes hikers back to Ibbenbüren. From Ibbenbüren bus station, the route leads through Ibbenbüren's town centre, which invites you to enjoy a leisurely end to the 17-kilometre hike. Then a short stretch along Groner Allee and the starting point is reached again.
