Regional hiking trail

Hidden in the middle of the forest are the three Kausbuchen, also known as Süntelbuchen, which give this 3.2 km circular trail its name. Short trunks, twisted and partially intertwined branches with drooping twigs and a crown that grows wide rather than tall describe the Kraus beech. Find peace and quiet, recharge your batteries, let your imagination run wild - the mystical Kausbuche beech invites you to do just that.

"The "old" Kraus beech, which has not existed for over 100 years, is described in an Eifel guide from 1906 as a "court beech". In the Middle Ages, it served as a place of justice. This old tree has rotted away and almost completely disappeared. In its place are three "descendants", one of which is the largest and oldest and does its predecessor proud. But even the smaller "neighbors" (one immediately next to it, one about 30 meters to the northeast, following the path into the forest) already offer visitors an exciting camp beneath the canopy of leaves. A place that has always served the locals as a cozy destination for their family Sunday walks and certainly also as a secret meeting place for lovers. It is said that in ancient times, a shepherd used this tree to graze his sheep in the surrounding area. He himself climbed the tree, which was like a staircase due to its growth, and thus kept an overview.

It is thought to be a Süntel beech, also known as devil's or witch's wood, cripple or snake beech. If you look at the tree, all these names are no wonder and there are no limits to the imagination. The trunk and branches twist and turn around each other like a corkscrew, forming an umbrella-like structure under which a cozy, shady cavity is created. In the case of the Kraus beech in Fleringen/Rommersheim, this is further enhanced by the calcareous dolomite rock on which it is enthroned. The trunk and rock form faces and shapes and give the tree its very own unmistakable personality." (Susanne Wingels)
