Regional hiking trail

Magnificent views of the town of Prüm, St. Salvator's Basilica and the nature surrounding the town make this challenging circular hike a special experience.

The panoramic hiking trail 120 around the Carolingian town of Prüm - "No matter which side we approach from: At some point, there it is, the first view down into the valley of Prüm and its proud basilica - beautiful, almost poetic, this sight leaves no one cold. There is no better way to view, explore and photograph Prüm from all sides than on the panoramic hiking trail 120 around the Carolingian town, which also offers plenty of views in other directions.

The challenging route, which covers a good 20 km and 430 meters of altitude difference, was created in 2008 to mark the 120th anniversary of the Prüm chapter of the Eifelverein. It starts at hiking parking lot 14 ("Wenzelbach") on the B410 between Prüm and Niederprüm, but can be started at various other parking lots and can of course be shortened in many ways or extended as desired by taking detours, for example into the town center of Prüm.

The trail leads past the Calvary, which was virtually blown to pieces in 1949 by the explosion of munitions stored there, so that four years after the end of the Second World War, death and destruction once again reigned in Prüm. A huge crater still dominates the summit today and a memorial commemorates the terrible event. For us hikers, however, the mountain also offers wonderful views of Prüm. A detour to the pretty Calvary Chapel, newly built after the disaster, with a view over Prüm and the Way of the Cross is highly recommended. From the Panoramaweg itself, the view up here to Niederprüm and over the Mehlenbach valley with its juniper heath and far beyond to Belgium can be enjoyed.

To the north of Tafel, the route leads along the Way of St. James and the Schneifel Trail. In the upper regions of the idyllic Tettenbusch, the Wolfsschlucht ski area offers an exciting view through the aisle into the valley and of a Bavarian-style landscape.

Of course, the trail can be experienced and walked in both directions. Niederprüm is not far from the starting point. From its heights, there is also a charming view of the village center of Niederprüm with the pretty white parish church of St. Gordianus and Epimachus, the impressive valley bridge of the A60 over the Prüm and the heights of Prüm at Kalvarienberg and Tettenbusch. Time to pause, let your gaze and thoughts wander and take a deep breath and simply enjoy the beauty of the landscape, the villages and the moment." (Susanne Wingels)
