Parking & start at the town hall in Rockeskyll, length: 4. 4 km, duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Right in the heart of the Vulkaneifel is probably the most complete volcano in Germany, the Rockeskyller Kopf. No other volcano shows so openly all stages of its development.

West of the village of Rockeskyll lies a geotope of special size and category, a volcanic complex from the Quaternary period. The latter began about 1. 8 million years ago and continues to this day. Like in a picture book, the volcanic buildings and volcanic deposits can be seen. You can lay hands on cooled lava and slag ash layers, see the crater rim and understand how the activity moved from one vent to another.

Come with us to this mysterious and instructive volcanic mountain, with its volcanic crater, the basalt quarry, inhabited and worshipped since ancient times by mammoth hunters, Celts and Romans. Admire the prominent mountain nose from the panoramic view, which shows the anatomy of an Eifel ash and slag volcano. Along the way, you will find information boards that explain many processes in more detail. In addition to the volcanic past, the circular route offers views of the Kasselburg and the Kylltal.

Starting point of the circular hike is the parking lot in the village center of 54570 Rockeskyll. We walk up the village road past the local sports ground. Behind it we make a big bend past the Rockeskyller Kopf, which shows us to the right of the path.

Details

The circular hiking trail is marked with the logo: Rockeskyller Kopf. From the car park, we keep left, cross the main road and turn right into Dorfstrasse.  We follow the ascending path past the sports field and then turn right to continue immediately to the right again. Passing the wayside cross from 1738, we walk past the edge of the forest on the left and then come across the volcano complex. Here the path leads uphill and we reach the panoramic view of the Eifel volcano. We continue through the marvellous Eifel forest, past the mountain outcrop of a basaltic Eifel volcano and the basalt quarries. After leaving the forest, we have a beautiful view of the Kasselburg and follow the road downhill. Shortly before the sports ground, we turn left and follow the same path as the outward route back to the church.
