Directions
The Schlehenroute is a circular route of around 45 kilometres through the varied parkland of northern Münsterland. The starting and finishing point is the centre of Altenberge, which makes an ideal starting and finishing point with its historic St. Johannes Baptist church and small cafés. Shortly after the start, the route climbs slightly to the east over the Altenberge ridge, from where there are sweeping views of the Münsterland cultural landscape. This first stage leads through the landscape conservation area around Hohenholte, characterised by orchards, meadows and small forests.
The route continues in a south-easterly direction to Greven. The passage through the open fields offers tranquillity and views - characteristic of the Münsterland region. In the vicinity of Greven, the route runs close to the well-known Ems cycle path; a detour in its direction is possible, but not part of the original track. There are numerous places to stop for refreshments and rest stops in and around Greven.
From Greven, the cycle tour continues in a north-westerly direction to Nordwalde. Flat paths through farmland dominate here, accompanied by hedgerows, avenues and occasional groups of trees. The quality of the path remains good throughout, partly tarmac, partly fine gravel, and is also suitable for e-bikes and touring bikes with luggage. The route crosses rural settlements with buildings typical of the region and always offers impressions close to nature, especially in spring when the sloes are in bloom or in late summer when the fruit is ripe.
From Nordwalde, the sloe route runs in a gentle curve back towards Altenberge. This section is particularly scenic, as open areas alternate with smaller sections of forest and meadows. The way back is characterised by little car traffic, a spacious route and numerous opportunities to linger in nature. The tranquillity of the region can be enjoyed to the full, particularly on the former railway line, which forms part of the route.
The entire route is signposted throughout as the NaTourismus-Route Schlehenroute and offers cultural and culinary experiences in addition to the diversity of the landscape. Along the way, farm shops, country cafés and farms invite you to take a break.
Getting There
Altenberge railway station is located on the outskirts of the town. Trains from Münster, Steinfurt, Gronau and Enschede stop here regularly. Altenberge is also connected to Münster via several bus routes. The central bus stop is located at the Altenberge post office.
The train stations in Nordwalde and Greven are also suitable for travelling to Altenberge.
By car via the A1 (Cologne-Bremen) or the A31 (Oberhausen-Emden) to the Münster-Nord junction or the Gronau/Ochtrup exit. From there, take the B54 to the Altenberge exit. Follow the signs in the direction of the city centre.
Parking
There are various parking facilities in the centre of Altenberge. There is another car park about 1 km away at the railway station.
Track Signage
All NaTourism routes are signposted in both directions. The route pictogram of the Schlehenroute shows a stylised bicycle on a curved vertical line. Below it, the words 'NaTourismus' are flush with the edge and the route name is flush right in the second line. On a light green background, the bicycle and the words 'Tour' are in violet, while the other elements are dark green. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the pictogram is integrated into the red and white cycle route signage. The pictogram is displayed as an insert sign below the destination signposting.
