The last remnants of a margarine factory
In front of the town hall in Lippinghausen is a clock tower that doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the more sober buildings. This tower used to be the "landmark" of Lippinghausen, the last structural remnant of the once famous Meyer-Lippinghausen margarine factory.
In Lippinghausen, the old buildings, including the Kontorhaus and the oil refinery with their clearly structured façades and decorative elements, which are very much in the tradition of the 19th century, were demolished, destroying the life's work of Hermann Meyer, one of the industrial pioneers of East Westphalia. The demolition of the old factory buildings was carried out amid protests from the people of Lippinghausen. It was too late for "the most important building of the Wilhelmine era", according to the conservationists, to be recognized as a historical monument. Only the clock tower, which was located on top of the Kontorhaus as a ridge turret and was the former landmark of Lippinghausen, has been preserved.
After years of discussing the location, it was decided to erect the Meylip clock tower on the grounds of the town hall. Here it forms a contrast to the architecture of the administration building.
The clockwork visible at the foot of the 11-metre-high clock tower has been lovingly restored with skilled craftsmanship. It dates back to 1904 and was built by the company Korfhage & Söhne from Melle.
