Between the big city and the Rhine, Duisburg Zoo immerses you in the fascinating world of around 9,000 animals from more than 400 species. Notorious pouched devils, cute koalas and cosy wombats cannot be observed in any other NRW zoo. Those who make it should plan their visit around the interactions between animals and keepers.
The koalas are absolute visitor favourites in Duisburg. Every Wednesday and Sunday, visitors can watch the keepers cradle the cute marsupials with their fluffy ears and beady eyes and learn all kinds of exciting facts about the animals' lives.
The Siberian tigers prefer to take it easy. In their near-natural enclosure, not only panoramic windows offer good opportunities to observe the mighty big cats during their nap or extensive bath.
In the Rio Negro tropical hall, you can immerse yourself in the fascinating animal world of South America.
With a little patience, you can discover sloths and small monkey species that move freely among the visitors. For a South Seas feeling, visit the neighbouring aquarium. Iridescent surgeon fish, glowing corals, elegant moray eels and the master of camouflage - octopus Teo - take you on a relaxing journey through the world of the oceans.
A visit to our closest relatives also promises an exciting encounter. While the silverback takes a siesta, the gorilla offspring romp around the hilly outdoor enclosure. You can get up close to the lemurs on the walk-through lemur island. Get up close and personal when the friendly monkeys romp through the treetops at dizzying heights and cross your path.
On the farm, goats, sheep and miniature cattle await visitors. The little zoo visitors can even get up close and personal with some of them in the petting zoo. In the immediate
neighbourhood, the large adventure playground, including a restaurant, invites visitors to romp around and linger.
