The Argelander Institute of the University of Bonn built an observatory (observatory) in 1953/54 on the volcanic group "Hoher List" near Schalkenmehren. It was used for scientific purposes until 2012.
Subsequently, the most modern building of the entire complex was taken over and continued to operate by the Astronomical Association Vulkaneifel (AVV).
In 2015, the observatory was placed under monument protection, preventing its dismantling.
The entire facility is now privately owned by a physicist who spent many years working in astronomical research on site.
