Near-natural stream in typical Siek

The Sudbach valley is a typical Ravensberg hill country valley and is a nature reserve. In order to make it easier to cultivate the originally deeply incised valley as wet grassland, the edges of the valley were cut off as early as the Middle Ages, the soil was spread over the valley floor and the stream was moved to the edge. The result was a box valley with low but steep slopes and a flat valley floor.
In recent years, numerous watercourse development measures have contributed to the Sudbach now flowing through the area again in a largely natural state. The stream is lined with old alder, ash and oak trees. Some areas are no longer mowed and have developed into wet wastelands and small riparian forests.
