Nordsternpark Gelsenkirchen - Art, culture and a mine

Be active, experience diverse art and culture and enjoy the refreshments on offer: In Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen you can spend an entire day packed full of action and experiences and also relax in a green space. In 1994, the site of the former Nordstern Mine on the Rhine-Herne Canal in Gelsenkirchen-Horst was extensively converted into a park on the occasion of the German Garden Show. It was completed in 1997 and since then has been a destination for relaxation and recreation directly on the canal. On the 100-hectare site, today you will find children’s play areas, climbing walls, cycle paths and running tracks, you can take a boat trip on the Rhine-Herne Canal and can view the entire area far into the Ruhr region from a height of 83 metres from the top of the Nordstern Tower.

Good views from the mine’s tower

At the heart of Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen, the former mining tower is impressive and today has listed status. Above the 83-metre viewing platform, the 18-metre Hercules sculpture by the artist Markus Lüpertz looks down on Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen and you can enjoy wonderful views over Ruhrpott. There is a museum on the history of Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen inside the tower.

Music and pleasure

The area is also regularly a venue for open-air concerts: In front of the imposing backdrop of the park and the extraction tower, in the amphitheatre you will experience wild rock concerts, atmospheric classical music and events for ExtraSchicht, the Night of Industrial Culture. And since so much action makes you hungry, in Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen there is authentic Pott cuisine in Heiner’s Restaurant. You can also find organic snacks made with regional ingredients on Ziegenmichelhof.
