At the site of the Nachtigall colliery, you can become a miner yourself and explore the tunnels.
LWL-Industriemuseum Zeche Nachtigall - Wie im Ruhrgebiet alles begann
The Zeche Nachtigall in Witten is considered the cradle of Ruhr mining and is therefore a must for all of you who want to know exactly what it was like.
Living pioneer times in the Muttental
The pioneer times of mining come alive in the Muttental. Equipped with helmets, visitors can explore a real coal seam in the Nachtigallstollen. Former miners will tell you about the tough conditions under which the miners once brought the "black gold" to the surface - a special adventure for families with children, too. In the "Hercules" shaft, which was once used for mining, you can learn about mining technology and working conditions in the 19th century. In the colliery's historic engine house, you can experience an audio-visual journey through the Ruhr Valley and relive the industrialisation era. The oldest winding engine in the Ruhr region is also located here. In the ring kiln you can see how the colliery, which was closed in 1892, was later used as a brickworks. You can combine your excursion to the Nachtigall colliery perfectly with a trip on the Ruhr Valley Railway from Hagen or from the Bochum Railway Museum as well as a short trip on the Muttentalbahn - a former mine railway.
