Cultural centre Industrial heritage

With its well-preserved facilities, some of which date back to 1855/56, the Carl colliery in Altenessen is considered an outstanding industrial monument.

The socio-cultural centre has existed for more than 30 years, making it one of the oldest of its kind in Germany: it is the venue for rock concerts and comedy, art exhibitions and theme parties, courses and workshops, readings and children's flea markets.

On the same site: the Maschinenhaus as a production site for the arts. For decades, the small but fine ensemble with its rough charm has been conveying in the smallest of spaces the motto that the Capital of Culture chose for itself in 2010: change through culture, culture through change.
