In the park landscape of West Münsterland lies the impressive Raesfeld moated castle dating from the 14th to 17th centuries. At 52.5 metres, the castle tower is the highest in Westphalia. The Sterndeuterturm and Baroque chapel complete the imposing castle complex. The adjacent zoo at Raesfeld Castle invites you to take long walks in nature.

History information

As you can see at first glance from the impressive castle: Raesfeld Castle has an eventful history to tell. From fortified round towers to elegant ornamental façades - the castle has had many functions over the course of time.

Originally, Raesfeld Castle served as protection against enemy attacks. For this purpose, an earthen mound castle was built in the middle of an inaccessible water and marsh landscape. In the 14th century, Bytter von Raesfeld built a newer castle with two corner towers and thus founded the dynasty of the von Raesfelds. In 1585, Raesfeld Castle passed by inheritance to the Lords of Velen. A period of great splendour followed. It was Count Alexander II who, between 1643 and 1658, extended the castle into the magnificent and representative residential palace it still is today. His impressive tomb relief can be discovered during a visit to the open castle chapel.

Today, the Academy of Crafts is located in the castle. As a training and seminar venue for historical craft techniques, the castle's former farm buildings are ebso exciting, as the focus here is on practical work. The workshops are usually locked. However, public events take place outside the castle or in the historic Knights' Hall.

Tour information

A tour of the castle grounds and the adjacent zoo is possible at any time. Guided tours of the grounds and the castle chapel are by appointment only.

Barcodes have been placed at various locations along the estate: using your own smartphone, you can unlock audio files that tell the story of the estate and its builders and owners.
