History informationThe history of the North Rhine-Westphalian State Stud dates back to 1732, when King Frederick William I founded the Prussian State Stud Administration to make breeding stallions available to field owners for a low stud fee. In 1826, the State Stud was founded under the same guidelines. In the following years, breeding successes were improved and the facilities expanded. After the end of the war, it became the property of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and is today assigned to the Ministry for the Environment, Agriculture, Nature Conservation and Consumer Protection of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1968, with the incorporation of the German Riding School, an institution unique in its kind, the areas of horse breeding and training of horse and rider merged in Warendorf. Around 90 active breeding stallions are kept in the stud's stables, which are protected as historical monuments. In total, the State Stud offers space for 160 horses on its eight-hectare grounds.
