Emsdetten Fens

The Emsdettener Venn is one of the few preserved raised bogs in Germany.

The Emsdettener Venn nature reserve is a very special water landscape and one of the few preserved raised bogs in Germany. Nevertheless, the area of around 325 hectares is merely the remains of a once intact raised bog. After centuries of intensive use, the Venn was the first area in the Steinfurt district to be placed under nature conservation in 1941. Today, the moor is used to preserve rare bird and plant species as well as for local recreation for nature enthusiasts.
