historical building Fortress/Castle

The Habichtswald hunting lodge is located in the west of the Tecklenburg region and is surrounded by the forest of the same name. Today, the castle is a hotel with a restaurant and can therefore be enjoyed mainly from the outside. Wonderful walks through the forest and a subsequent visit to the café make the castle a worthwhile destination.

On the grounds of the hunting lodge is a 300-year-old Femelinde tree, which can also be visited.

Tour information
  • It is not possible to visit the interior, as there is a hotel in the hunting lodge.
  • A visit to the restaurant is possible during opening hours.
  • A visit to the outside is possible at any time, as long as it does not disturb the restaurant and hotel operations.
History information

The construction of the Habichtswald hunting lodge was commissioned by the Count of Bentheim-Tecklenburg in 1641. Even then, the count's fortress served as a hunting residence, surrounded by moats, fish ponds and forests.

When the county of Bentheim fell to the House of Hohenzollern in 1707, the Habichtswald, including the hunting lodge, became Prussian territory. In 1826, Arnold Rehorst bought the fortress complex with 300 acres of land. The remaining, larger part of the area became state forest.

Since 2002, the Habichtswald hunting lodge has been home to a hotel and restaurant.
