Fortress/Castle

The history of Heimerzheim Castle is an exemplary reflection of the changing times: It was built by the Lords of Heimerzheim in the Middle Ages as a fortified moated castle and is now used as a hotel by the Barons of Boeselager, as well as being rented out as a conference and event location. The castle complex consists of a main castle and an outer castle. Both parts rest on their own island.
The changing owners, including the Teutonic Knights and the famous Count Belderbusch, first minister at the court of the Electors of Cologne, altered the castle according to their requirements. Today, the main castle, modelled on French court culture, shines in an elegant, representative style. The lords of Meinerzhagen extended and remodelled it in this style in the 17th century. The three-winged main castle opens to the south onto a magnificent landscaped park, through which the Swistbach stream flows. The outer bailey and the castle pavilion have been converted into an exclusive event location with a hotel in recent years.
