Fortress/Castle Historic site Tourist attractions – various historical building

The Niederburg Manderscheid majestically rises above the Liesertal and offers hands-on medieval experiences: in the digital and barrier-free adventure world or at the "Historical Castle Festival" on the last weekend of August.

Majestically, the Niederburg Manderscheid rises above the Liesertal - a place where history comes alive. First mentioned in 1173, it was owned by the Counts of Manderscheid for centuries.

The Upper and Lower Castle are only a stone's throw apart and were once the backdrop for a bitter struggle for power and dominance. The Niederburg, the younger of the two medieval structures, captivates with its impressive location on a steep rocky ridge and exciting insights into the life of past eras.

The Niederburg Manderscheid can be explored as part of a guided tour (for groups of 10 or more) or on your own, and it is only closed in case of bad weather. A real highlight is the night tour with knight Lukas of Manderscheid, who takes guests on an authentic journey through the old walls.

In the newly created experience world, visitors can dive deep into the past thanks to augmented reality applications and 360° videos, and conduct virtual tours with an app. Steles on the castle grounds also offer additional audiovisual information.

The barrier-free castle courtyard, new sanitary facilities, and a barrier-free tourist information center with seating invite visitors to linger. A scale model for tactile exploration allows visually impaired visitors to experience the Niederburg through touch and perceive distances and elevation changes.

Once a year, the Niederburg becomes the scene of a grand medieval spectacle: during the "Historical Castle Festival" on the last weekend of August, the entire area transforms into a lively time travel experience with knight tournaments, jugglers, musicians, and a large artisan market.
