The 4th stage of the "Medebacher Bergweg" quality trail leads from the little half-timbered village of Medelon through the picturesque Orketal valley over 450 meters uphill to Medebach's hilltop village of Küstelberg.

This stage is a challenging tour on the Medebacher Bergweg, as it takes us from the idyllic Orketal valley (372 m above sea level) up to the Rösberg at 766 m above sea level.

Along the Orke, in the Vildischer Grund, we experience meadow valleys with valuable nutrient-poor and wet grassland, where rare butterflies and birds such as red-backed shrike and whitethroat feel particularly at home. We pass several boards on the Orke water trail, where we can find out about the natural diversity along the stream.

After around 6 km, we leave the tranquil Orke valley and hike up into the beech forest nature reserve on the Deutmecke, with 400 meters of elevation ahead of us! We cross the Deutmeckebach stream over large boulders, accompanied by the magnificent beech forest of the Glindfeld forest reserve. At the Rösberg summit, a fantastic view of the Winterberg plateau makes up for the strenuous climb. The remaining 3 km to the village of Küstelberg are a leisurely end to the hike.

Details
The mountain trail is marked throughout with the "Maltese Cross", the sign of the crusaders.

Wherever possible, we have placed red stickers with this cross, in the open countryside we have sometimes preferred paint and brushes, where you will find white crosses on a black background.

Current information about our forests - The bark beetle and its consequences

The forest owners are endeavoring to take the necessary measures in the forests and to remove the damaged wood. However, due to the extent of the damage, this work cannot be completed in a short space of time. The clearing and reforestation of the damaged forest stands will therefore take a long time and sometimes lead to disruptions such as closures and detour in the forests. This must always be taken into account when visiting the forest.

We therefore appeal to everyone who cares about the forest:

  • Understand that extensive forestry work is necessary in the current situation and that this is currently accompanying your forest experience.

  • Be particularly attentive during your leisure activities and observe the prevailing instructions and any prohibitions.
