Cycle tour around Ibbenbüren

The cycle path along the Ibbenbürener Aa leads cyclists out of town to Gravenhorst Monastery and on to the Nassen Dreieck, the meeting point of the Mittelland and Dortmund-Ems canals. The route continues through Bevergern to the extensive forests around Surenburg Castle. The route leads through fields and meadows to Riesenbeck. The towpath along the Dortmund-Ems Canal leads cyclists to Ibbenbüren-Dörenthe, where a stop at the botanical garden and NaturaGart is worthwhile, before a short mountain stage over the Teutoburg Forest leads back to Ibbenbüren.

This tour tip "Monastery, canal, cliffs" leads, apart from a small ascent over the Teuto, on signposted, predominantly flat, tarmac routes in the Münsterland cycling region.

Route description

On this tour tip, you will get to know the Münsterland cycling region to the west and south of Ibbenbüren on predominantly flat, tarmac routes. However, there is one ascent over the "Teuto" that has to be mastered. Firstly, you cycle along an idyllic path along the Ibbenbürener Aa towards Gravenhorst Monastery. The tour continues to the "wet triangle", where the Dortmund-Ems and Mittelland Canal meet. On the section of the route along the Dortmund-Ems Canal, you have a wonderful view of the western part of the Teutoburg Forest. Close to the canal, the Loismann Botanical Gardens and NaturaGart Park are ideal for a break. The rest of the route requires some fitness, as you have to cross the Teutoburg Forest north of Ibbenbüren-Dörenthe. If you have enough time, you should plan a short hike to the Dörenthe cliffs from the hikers' car park on the B219. From there, you have a beautiful view of the Münsterland region. The route continues past the "summer toboggan run", then downhill again and back to the starting point in Ibbenbüren.
